Travel Talk: Santa Monica Proper Hotel

If you don’t already know, now you’ll know..

The Santa Monica Proper Hotel designed by the infamous legend, Kelly Wearstler, is a designer’s dream with wall-to-wall inspiration. The overall design is a celebration of interiors — sophisticated, bold, and eclectic with a mix of natural materials and modern furnishings. No detail was spared and no corner was left without thoughtful curation.

The original 1928 Arthur E. Harvey building was converted into a magnificent 271-room luxury hotel. In the heart of Santa Monica, the hotel boasts Spanish and Moorish features that complement the structure's original Spanish Colonial Revival design, enhancing its historical significance. The term “loose luxury” is conveyed throughout with woven textiles, soft earth-tones, textured patterns, and stone finishes, giving off a refined yet breezy beach vibe.

The lobby of the hotel is designed to make a statement, with striking abstract patterned wood flooring and prominent tile wrapped columns that melt into the ceiling . The furniture is an eclectic mix of vintage and modern pieces, reminding you of the iconic past and present designers. Large potted plants add a touch of natural beauty and a sense of vibrancy to the space.

The guest rooms are thoughtfully designed with a focus on natural materials and textures, such as woven fabrics, organic patterns, and rich woods. The color palette boasts a mix of earthy neutrals that evoke both an energy and calmness simultanueously.

The rooftop pool is memorable with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The dark blue tile finish of the pool creates a beautiful contrast with the white surroundings and the blue of the ocean in the distance.

Throughout the hotel, there are a number of design details that add to the overall ambiance. The lighting fixtures are both functional and beautiful, with custom designs that create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The use of natural materials, such as wood and marble, creates a sense of warmth and elegance, while the carefully curated art and decorative objects add a sense of personality and style.
